Srinagar, Jan 18 (GNS): Mutton dealers under the banner of ‘Unity Mutton Traders of Kashmir’ on Monday staged a protest demonstration at press enclave here, demanding fixing of what they said “genuine rate” per kilogram of meat in the Valley.
“Government has not fixed genuine rate for per kilogram of mutton as a result of which our families have been severely affected. Our shops are closed for three months now,” said Mohammad Salim Mir, one of the protesters as per GNS.
“The government says that there are 80000 sheep units, let them provide us livestock. We will sell mutton as per the government prescribed rates,” he added.
Another protester said that it was unfair on part of the government to fix the rate at Rs 480 per kilogram, saying how could “we sell it at the rate so fixed by the government when in mandis we get it at Rs 580 per kg while there is addition of freight charges to bear for us.” They demanded government to revisit the rate so fixed.
